Indiana House returning next week to address redistricting
24+ min ago (405+ words) Minutes after the Indiana House confirmed it will return to the Statehouse next week to redistrict, Senate Republicans reversed course and will show up Dec. 8 to "make a final decision on any redistricting proposal sent from the House." House Speaker Todd Huston said in a statement released Tuesday that "House Republicans will gavel in on Monday, Dec. 1, reconvening the 2026 regular session. All legislative business will be considered beginning next week, including redrawing the state's congressional map. No proposed maps have been released as of midday Tuesday by legislative leaders showing how the General Assembly might accede to Trump's wish for Republican-led states to draw more GOP-friendly U.S. House districts ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. The move presents an intra-Republican Party challenge to the state Senate, where Senate President Pro Tem Rodric Bray has declared too few senators are in support for…...
Groups spent $9M lobbying Kentucky executive branch officials in past fiscal year
32+ min ago (1419+ words) More than 600 businesses and organizations combined to spend $9.1 million on lobbyists attempting to persuade executive branch officials in Kentucky in the previous fiscal year, according to reports filed with the Executive Branch Ethics Commission. This spending total on lobbyists in the period from July 1 last year to June 30 this past summer is just shy of the record set in the previous fiscal year. Kentucky has long required groups to report their spending on legislative lobbyists, but first required reports on executive branch lobbying spending in 2020. This push for increased transparency followed the conviction of a former cabinet secretary and lobbyist for orchestrating a kickback scheme to steer large government contracts to clients. The top spender on executive branch lobbyists in the last fiscal year was Ernst & Young, one of the largest accounting firms in the country. The company reported spending…...
TVKiese's top 20 holiday specials
2+ day, 20+ hour ago (1286+ words) After 35 years, I'm changing things up. No longer am I going against the stream. Instead of a 20-page PDF listing all the Christmas specials, I'm doing a list of my 20 favorite holiday programs, cartoons, movies and specials this year. And at the bottom of this post you'll find a dozen December specials I want you to know about. Hopefully, your holiday favorites will be among my Christmas classics: Rudolph, Frosty, and the original Grinch cartoon and Miracle on 34th Street, as well as my all-time favorite Christmas movie, White Christmas, with Rosemary Clooney, Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye and Cincinnati natives Vera-Ellen and George Chakiris. But you won't find every Christmas show as I've done in the past. Viewing has become far too fractured with so many streaming services. I list The Santa Clause, but not the sequel. Sorry, you're on your…...
OKI Wanna Know about airports, state routes, and drive-ins
4+ day, 13+ hour ago (1067+ words) You ask all kinds of questions for our feature OKI Wanna Know. Some of them are answered easily. Some, not so much. Here's a selection of both kinds in this exclusive, bonus, online-only edition of OKI Wanna Know. Two people are confused and more than a little annoyed by a de-boarding process at the Cincinnati Northern Kentucky International Airport. Lynne Lancaster and Joe McKibben both asked why they have to go through security again, after arriving at CVG from an international flight. Lynne says it doesn't happen at other airports. Joe adds "Why? I'm entering Kentucky, not a passenger airliner." So, in short, once you get off your non-stop flight from London, laden with duty-free perfume and vodka, you may be going into Kentucky, or, you may be getting on another plane. They want to check you again. We asked…...
How not to overeat at the holidays, or at least not feel bad if you do
4+ day, 13+ hour ago (554+ words) Then you might end up feeling way too full and questioning your decisions. Bryn Beeder is a registered dietitian and visiting instructor of Kinesiology, Nutrition and Health at Miami University. She says it's important to note that overeating is a universal experience, and your body knows what to do with all the extra food. She does have tips for how to avoid overeating. "If I had to kind of boil it down to my top two tips, it would be: slow down and stay upright," she tells WVXU. Eating slowly will allow your body more time to send you those cues that let you know you're starting to feel full. Larger meals, like those often found on the table this time of year, can involve more of all the macronutrients " carbohydrates, proteins and fats " that take time for your digestive…...
Analysis: Ohio Republicans quietly pass bill that could disenfranchise thousands of voters
4+ day, 14+ hour ago (748+ words) Before they adjourned for the Thanksgiving holiday last week, Republicans left an unwelcome surprise for Democrats and Ohio's voting rights advocates in the form of Senate Bill 293, a bill which could disenfranchise thousands of Ohio voters. SB 293 came out of nowhere. It was introduced in mid-October and the Republican majority " after holding a single public hearing " passed it in early November with no support from Democrats. It is a far-reaching piece of legislation that will fundamentally change how Ohio's elections are conducted. It would: Republicans argued that speed in passing SB 293 was necessary because of a pending U.S. Supreme Court case out of Mississippi where it is likely the high court will end the grace period for ballots received after Election Day. Ohio, the Republicans said, is just getting ahead of the situation before it becomes an issue. Ohio Public Radio's…...
As God as my witness, turkeys CAN fly
4+ day, 15+ hour ago (416+ words) Even if you've never watched the sitcom WKRP in Cincinnati, there's one line you're probably familiar with. "As God as my witness, I thought turkeys could fly." That's Dayton native Gordon Jump as Mr. Carlson, owner of the fictional radio station, after a promotion that's not gone as envisioned. Without giving away any spoilers, insinuating turkeys can't fly is the punchline for the sitcom's Thanksgiving episode. But, the thing is" "Yes. They can fly." Rickey Kinley is head birder at the Cincinnati Zoo. He admits they're not great flyers. "If a predator or a threat comes along, they can have a very strong burst of flight where they get off the ground and they can fly up into trees, or fly a short distance away," he says. Kinley says their wings are among the shortest of most bird species in…...
Taft Football honored by city and school board after historic season
5+ day, 21+ hour ago (366+ words) The Cincinnati Public Schools Board of Education and the City of Cincinnati honored the Taft High School Football team Monday evening for the program's historic season, which concluded earlier this month. The Taft Senators went undefeated in the regular season, shutting out most of their opponents on their way to the playoffs. The team suffered its only loss in Ohio's Division IV regional semi-final on Nov. 14, after a heartbreaking fumble at the goal line late in the game against the home team, the Indian Hill Braves, who went on to beat the Senators 25-19. Taft finished the year with an 11-1 record. Indian Hill remains undefeated and is set to take on the Shelby Whippets in the state semi-finals this Friday. Despite Taft's success, the team's season was overshadowed by a controversy following their loss. The superintendent of Indian Hill Schools later…...
Cincinnati officials looking for new location to open a permanent day shelter
6+ day, 2+ hour ago (417+ words) Plans for a city-run day shelter in Cincinnati are moving forward, but not in the originally planned location. City Council allocated $5.5 million in the latest city budget to buy and renovate a building on West Fifth Street in Queensgate, across the street from the winter overnight shelter operated by Shelterhouse. The building at 760 W. 5th St. is owned by the Cincinnati Museum Center, which uses the space for records storage. City Human Services Director Deanna White says the current owner will not move out soon enough for the city to open the day center in 2027 as planned. They're now looking at other options. "If we center people experiencing homelessness, and then think about locations that would be the most convenient for them, you're looking at areas immediately adjacent to the Central Business District," White told WVXU. White says more funding could be…...
